In the year of 1995. Split Town Council initiated the organization of this tournament, inviting all sporting associations to make preparations for the celebration of 1700 years of urban living in this town. Split fencing clubs accepted this invitation and organized the fencing tournament "Kup Svetog Duje" which is now being held every year on the day of local holiday "The Day of St. Duje". Tournament was named after the town's saint Duje - the celestial patron of Split.
Year 1995 brought a significant increase in the number of domestic competitors, which was a reason good enough to enlist this tournament in the official competition calendar of the Croatian Fencing Federation. Due to the appealing date on which the tournament is being held each year, nice climate and the geographical position of Split on the coast of the Adriatic Sea, this tournament has been attracting more and more competitors from neighboring countries over the last ten years, thus becoming international.
From 2006 women's senior epee, and 2008 men's senior epee became official competitions of The International Fencing Federation (FIE) carrying a label "FIE SATELLITE". It has been enlisted in the FIE official competition calendar.
